Everyone has their beauty security blankets. For me, having dark hair and light eyes meant I would never get out of my comfort zone of a pink tint on my lips and extremely minimal eye makeup, usually all accented with a flush on my cheeks. I had convinced myself a long time ago that going darker with eye makeup didn’t suit me, and a nude lip definitely wasn’t for me. After working with several beauty artists who transformed my look by basically doing that exact combo (smokey eyes, very nude lip), I was inspired to give this look a go on my own finally. Cue in Charlotte Tilbury’s The Rock Chick Signature Look – with products that seamlessly work together to create a sultry, effortlessly cool look and easy how-to’s from Charlotte herself, the whole beauty experience from beginning to end was beyond easy and I’m so in love with the end result. Click through to see my whole tutorial!
First of all, if you haven’t already checked it out, there are a ton of different signature looks by the cult celebrity favourite that you can navigate through. For me, while this look wouldn’t translate into everyday wear for me, it’s the perfect fit for the evenings. As someone who audio-wise still lives in the ’70s (T. Rex, The Clash and The Jam tend to be on heavy rotation), I’ve always been heavily inspired by ’70s beauty icons, especially those in the rock scene (so, lots of groupies, but you know…the cool ones that actually married their rock conquests). I’m not comfortable feeling totally pulled together and “glam” usually, so something like this that has a bit of a lived-in, edgier quality to it is a perfect look for the evenings.
And now, without further ado, here’s how I tackled this look:
SHOP THE BEAUTY LOOK
1. I started out with a relaxing 5-min mini facial with Charlotte’s famous
Magic Cream – she has a tutorial here!
2. I blended a touch of Wonder Glow with my Lise Watier Luminous Foundation
in 06 to just even out my skin tone but didn’t touch my freckles – I love the look
of a dark eye with really natural skin and my freckled nose on full display!
3. I then created a cat eye with The Feline Flick, which is the one eye makeup
look I have on lock-down since my teenage years. I have a tutorial here if you need it!
4. Using the stunning Luxury Palette designed for the Rock Chick look, I started
with the lightest shade on the upper left as a base for my whole lid. I then defined my
crease with that shade in the top right, and smoked up my eyes finally with the darkest
shade on the bottom right, adding some smoked out definition on the bottom. I forgot to
include it in this snap above but I just grabbed a kohl liner and quickly traced my upper
and lower lash lines as well, blending it with the dark eye shadow smudged next to it!
5. I quickly defined my brows with Burberry’s eyebrow pencil, ensuring I used a
light hand and just focused on defining and filling in any patchy parts.
6. I applied two coats of the Luxurious Mascara, focusing on brushing outwards
on the outer edge of my lashes to highlight the feline shape.
7. Using the Cheek to Chic Swish & Pop blusher in First Love, I circled around the outer
part to pick up the darker shade and brushed it along and slightly below my
cheekbones to create some definition, then using the middle shade to add a
pop of colour to the apples of my cheeks.
8. Using the Lip Cheat pencil in Iconic Nude, I traced the natural shape of my lips
and just focused on defining – my lips are relatively full so if I “cheat” them and fill
them out much more, they usually look like I just came from a fresh visit at the clinic
to get some new filler. If you want to plump up your pout a bit though, just budge slightly
past your natural shape, basically outlining on top of it working from the corner of your
top lip.
9. Using a lip brush, I patted on some Nude Kate lipstick (inspired by the great Kate herself,
one of Charlotte’s longterm clients and friends!) from the centre of my lip blending out.
10. Just to highlight the shape of my lips and add some added oomph to an evening-out
look, I highlighted my lips at the centre with a touch of Lip Lustre in Blondie.
And that’s it! Throw on your favourite biker jacket, muss up your hair by adding in some waves and some dry shampoo, and just pack your lip gloss – what’s great about this look is the more lived-in and messy it gets, the better IMO. I can’t wait to do a toned-down version of this for festival season later this summer and to replicate this for a night out soon!
