SHOP THE LOOK
I’ve been pretty sick over the past week or so, which has conveniently left me with a lot of time to catch up on some of my favourite things: reading some of my favourite blogs and sites (currently obsessed with The Chalkboard Mag in particular!), reading my books (after hearing so much about it I’m finally making my way through A Return to Love) and consuming TED Talks like nobody’s business. As is often the case when I go on a TED Talk spree, one really, really struck a chord with me, particularly as it relates to some of my goals and intentions for the new year – click through to see it!

my 2015 goal-setting post (or rather, my intention-setting post), I’m trying to really focus on intentions that are about the journey rather than yet another “success” milestone. One thing I’m really trying to focus on this year that’s all about my day-to-day life rather than crossing a finish line is finding silence more often, or rather, more mental silence. 2014 was such an incredible year but the few periods that felt rougher were the parts of the year that were characterized by major over-thinking and worrying more than anything – all in all, just way too much mental chatter.
As I mentioned in
This talk by brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor talks about her experience in suffering from a stroke, her recovery and most importantly, how it helped her better understand the true functions of both sides of the brain. She explains it so beautifully but to put it briefly, she articulated how during the stroke, the left hemisphere of her brain (the analytical, logical, thinking part) was intermittently silenced for periods of time, allowing her to exist for short periods of time solely in the right hemisphere (the intuitive, creative, infinite part). To hear what that experience was like, well…just watch her talk! It’s definitely one of the more special talks I’ve seen.
Like so many other people out there, I definitely devote a bit too much time to left-brain thinking, obsessing over details and worrying and constantly cycling through different what-if scenarios. I’m trying to learn how to tap into the right brain a bit more, to be still, to see the ironic genius in not thinking about everything so much and to trust my intuition more. Meditation, play, travel, exercise, music, laughter and creativity are all priorities this year, which is a far happier list to focus on rather than my usual check list of goals. See? Sometimes, being sick can actually be pretty awesome!
Of course, being sick during a random fog spell on the city has helped (anyone else find it incredibly difficult being sick when it’s sunny out?) as I’ve felt totally fine about being a hermit inside. Before the cold really took over though, Alicia and I hung out at Granville Island on a particularly foggy day and it was so eerily beautiful. The thick fog deterred most people from the ordinarily busy market that day and it was just us and the seagulls outside. Cozied up in my current favourite piece (this incredible wrap jacket from Free People), my go-to knit scarf and the most classic duo (James Jeans skinnies and a silk blouse), the fog made for the most incredible backdrop for this casual yet subtly dramatic look (gotta love the long proportions!).
While I’m still dealing with a congested, balloon-head feeling and a bit of a sore throat, I’m finally making my return back outside today, and it’s for something I couldn’t be more excited about! Myself and my girl Alicia are working on a super exciting project (follow along on Insta for some teasers!) and personally, I couldn’t be more excited to bring one of my greatest passions in life to you guys in what I think will be a really fun way. In the meantime, happy Wednesday friends! Hope you’re all having an amazing week!
