Without a doubt, one of my absolute most-treasured holiday traditions is going to the Nutcracker with the ladies of my family. It’s something we’ve done for years and years – in fact, one of the earliest memories I have is of going to the Nutcracker in my favourite navy velvet dress when I was 5 years old or so! This year, our tradition was made all the more special thanks to Homer St. Cafe & Bar (fave restaurant int he city!) and Ballet BC – click through to see the whole evening!
We began the evening at Homer St. Cafe & Bar, which is my perennial go-to since it’s opened its doors. Whether I’m in for a quick cocktail or a full meal, I love its laid-back yet stylish vibe – and, of course, the food and cocktails are beyond. The cocktail list has so many amazing options but I always come back for the Eastern Voyage, it’s addictive (though there’s some great new concoctions that I still need to try out!). Homer St. is known for its amazing mains (particularly its famous rotisserie chicken) but since we were headed to the ballet, we opted for some lighter fare, including the most amazing radicchio and roasted pear salad and truly heavenly seared scallops. A big thank you to Homer St. for having us and if you’re visiting Vancouver or live here, be sure to pay them a visit – they’re incredible!
And then, the ballet!!! It was everything you would hope a loved classic like the Nutcracker would be, but I especially loved how Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet updated it with a Canadian spin, complete with hockey games and polar bears! The dancing was exquisite, the sets were breathtaking and I especially loved the beautiful costumes. It was all so amazing. I’m so excited to take in more ballet in 2015 with Ballet BC – if you’re in Vancouver, keep an eye on their calendar for the coming year, there are so many incredible performances coming up! It’s honestly such a refreshing and special way to get together with friends, family or even for a romantic night out – there’s such an emotional and beautiful quality to ballet, one that even the worst dancer in the world (that would be me) can’t fail to appreciate. Attending more of Ballet BC’s incredible offerings is definitely a new focus of mine!
I’ve gone full-holiday mode since this weekend and the Nutcracker was definitely the holiday tradition I needed to help me realize I had to get a move on when it comes to holiday shopping, the rest of my traditions and, of course, holiday baking. Wish me luck as I go full-steam ahead!
I love that dress! Great with the leather jacket. And that food looks amazing.
