This J.Crew neon skirt from SS13 (on sale at The Outnet here!) has always been a favourite of mine, though it’s been a piece I’ve always struggled to wear. Bought on a whim during a trip with my besties to Portland last summer, I think I’ve worn it a whopping total of three times since. Thankfully, throwing time at a style conundrum always seems to help shed some new perspective/inspiration, and after letting the skirt take a break in my closet for over a year, I’ve finally discovered the trick to styling neon so that it feels true to me – click through to read more!
Like so many other style conundrums I’ve had in the past, it’s working against what I think should be general styling conventions for a particular trend that end up feeling right and working for me. I’ve always thought of neon as a bright, happy trend – something that should be paired with soft, airy tones to highlight its high-impact quality, colours like white, cream or similarly bright tones. While I do think having a touch of these tones (brought to you today by my favourite ever heels from J.Crew and sunnies) helps bring out neon, I’ve discovered that I feel so much more comfortable and true to my tomboyish-meets-femme style by grounding the neon with darker, moodier tones. Think edgy black, luxurious navy, timeless grey, even some earthy tones (electric blue and a burnished bronze tone is one pairing I need to try!).
Other than pairing this skirt with my 424 Fifth perforated top, I’m so excited to transition this piece into the fall and winter as well with chunky grey knits, a cozy navy cashmere pullover, etc, etc – the options are endless. Though neon was definitely not trending in the same way this year as it was last year, I’m inspired all over again to pull out those old pieces and make them work for this summer and the seasons to come!

I love how you combined the most amazing color (black) with neon.
Most people when they chose to wear neon things, in the end it just looks trashy, but your outfit is just simply amazing!
