As I was heading out in this outfit the other day, I stopped while catching a glimpse of myself in our hallway mirror. While piecing this outfit together had been a pretty seamless, effortless process, I had to ask myself as I stood before the mirror…had it all been too easy? It’s not exactly like I haven’t gone for this Parisian-esque, black-white-red combo before (see Evidence 1, 2 and 3).
I faltered for a moment, wondering if I should spice up the old routine a bit or make it a bit less “easy” for myself, but then I realized…why fight it? This slightly laid-back, femme go-to has become something of a uniform for me, and as we all know, when it comes to style, uniforms can be very handy things to have. This is definitely my “weekend uniform” – a decidedly more femme and playful iteration of my “work week uniform,” which usually consists of skinnies, flats, a T and a sweater or leather jacket (I walk to work so comfort is important!). Both of them serve a practical function, but even if they can get a bit redundant sometimes, that doesn’t detract from the fact that I happen to always feel put-together and confident in these uniforms.
If anything, that’s what all these years of puzzling over my wardrobe should’ve been for, right? Not that I’m saying I’m done discovering future uniforms (and these current ones will likely get tweaked along the road), but if you manage to really fall for one or two formulas that work for you, I’m all for surrendering to them 100% and wearing the hell out of those personal staples.
Tell me: do you have a uniform (or 2 [or 3]) and how do you liven them up now and then to keep them interesting?
