For years, my closet was largely filled with pretty but impractical pieces: vintage lace dresses, sequin skirts, random thrift store finds bought on impulse, etc. Recognizing this a couple years ago, I made it my goal to start buying practical pieces…things that I could wear day in, day out. Well, I ended up accomplishing my goal and then some – I have piles upon piles of great staple pieces, but when it comes to my daytime looks, I’ve felt like those special, stand-out items have been lacking.
Along with the rest of FASHION Magazine‘s Style Panel, I’m sharing my resolution of incorporating my more unique pieces (like this J.Crew sweater, also worn here and here) more often. I think it’s all about the balance – for every three basic T-shirts or sweaters bought, I’m now allowing myself to indulge in a completely impractical purchase. As long as you have a solid roster of staples, fusing in the more show-stopper items is a cinch.
On another note, thank you for the kind words of encouragement on yesterday’s post! Happy to report that I’m already feeling a bit better after even a couple days of sticking to my hypoallergenic diet, which makes me feel stupid for being so resistant to it for so long. But as anyone who’s gone through trying to diagnose and treat always-evasive gut issues can probably attest to, after months of being strict and trying to treat myself properly with little to no improvement, I just got fed up and gave up…it gets exhausting and super frustrating to try to control something that has yet to be diagnosed properly. If my inbox is anything to go off of though, I’m not the only one who’s gone through this! As always, if you’re into hearing more about health, be it recipes, fitness tips, etc., don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments! Working on a fitness post for this month, excited to share it soon!

This is seriously one of my favourite looks from you ever, that sweater is such a gorgeous piece, it looks perfect with the brown leather jacket. I've definitely been trying to find more versatile things to rework in as many ways as possible. Gorgeous photos!!

I love that sweater! So pretty! And I struggle with that balance all the time… my closet is filled with dresses that aren't really practical for anything – they are too fancy for work, but when it comes to a night out, they feel too formal. I guess I am drawn to like… wedding guest attire… when I'm out shopping! Ha! So silly! I really, REALLY need to focus on both basics AND fun yet wearable pieces.
I love this look! Please get in touch with me [email protected] as I am from Ireland but am researching fashion stylists etc in Vancouver…
Absolutely love this! I need to find myself a lovely statement/jewelled sweater! xx Viève
Thanks for sharing! I love this sweater; although I would have a hard time being convinced to buy it because I too love my boyish pieces so much! I think its great to try and balance yourself though so good for you, you look great either way!
