How to Pop Champagne Like a Pro
Photography by Ainsley Rose Photography
Since it’s the weekend and NYE is just around the corner, it seemed like the perfect time to show you guys one of the handiest party tricks I’ve ever picked up – The Twist. While popping the top off a champagne bottle in a big, uncontrolled way can be really fun, it’s also potentially a bit dangerous – I’ve personally experienced the latter side effect (popped the cork squarely right between my eyes). Thankfully, I picked up this twist trick during my tenure in university as Cactus Club’s worst waitress ever (literally, failed my secret shopper test and somehow they didn’t fire me) – I couldn’t do much as a server but this I was good at! As photographed by the lovely Ainsley Rose Photography, this is how you do The Twist.
Take off the wrapping as usual (is this gold Bottega bottle not NYE perfection?).
Unscrew the wire and be sure to keep the bottle directed away from your face just in case’s it’s been shaken or the cork is loose already.
Now here is the trick: instead of using your thumbs to press it up (which usually results in foam exploding everywhere or the cork ricocheting off walls), simultaneously apply pressure downwards and twist the cork. Go very slowly so that you can feel when the cork’s about to release itself – when it does so, continue to just lightly hold the cork above the opening for a few seconds!
Et voilà! No mess, no injuries.
Pour your glass at a slight angle (as you would with beer) to prevent the bubbles from getting too frenzied.
And you’re done! Time to celebrate!
Oh and PS – once the labels are peeled off and it’s rinsed out, this bottle makes for the most beautiful vase! Ainsley‘s already test-driven it and says it looks amazing in her space!
Ainsley Rose = photographer extraordinaire, model, amazing all-around person and apparently hair stylist in a pinch too. Love this hair twist she did on me – still showcases the longer curls while creating a festive, boho look too.
And of course, no champagne party would be complete without glitter!
Happy weekend everybody! Test drive The Twist this weekend and let me know how it works for you!

You are so gorgeous Alex! Great post, I'm always such a baby when it comes to opening champagne and pass it over to someone else to open. Maybe I'll try it myself this year 😉 All the best in 2014! xo

Very pretty photos, Alex!! And a timely "tutorial" for the upcoming New Year's festivities!! That gold bottle is certainly fancy…much more so than the sparkling apple juice that I usually drink!! What can I say; I'm a cheap date!! 😉
