White Heat
Skinnies & tank c/o Joe Fresh, American Eagle sandals, Rebecca Minkoff bag,
This weekend was really the perfect staycation: we hosted our housewarming on Friday (which incidentally also gave us a deadline to finally get rid of the little mountain of cardboard we were developing in the living room), spent all Saturday and Sunday at the beach and had a wonderful brunch with some of my favourite girls at Café Régalade, which is where I wore this brights-on-white look to.
In all honesty, I’ve always shied away from white skinnies because thanks to years of playing sports and running, biking, swimming or hitting the gym, I don’t have twig legs…I definitely have some muscle on my stems. As much as I love being strong, when it comes to wearing white bottoms, I do want to make sure I don’t look like I’m trying out for Mr. Olympia (if you don’t know what that is then chellooooo please watch Pumping Iron with Arnold Schwarzenneger!).
A little trick I use is to pair white bottoms with a cheery bright-toned or no-fail black top. I do this for a couple reasons: a. as much as I love a clean white-on-white look, the colour makes the white really pop and b. it helps balance out the whole look so that the focus isn’t on your bottom half.
But the real lesson ultimately is to just wear whatever anyway, despite your style-related fears, because probably, your fears aren’t worth listening to. I was always scared to do white pants because the last time I wore them as an extremely awkward 15 year old in the midst of the world’s worst pubescent development, a major ass wipe who looks like Scott Farkus from A Christmas Story (here’s a visual) called me Thunder Thighs. I remember telling myself even then that he was probably just an insecure dick and that I should just ignore what he said, but it did stick with me and I somehow convinced myself that I should just never do white skinnies.
Well, I ended up buying these skinnies at Joe Fresh’s Lonsdale opening Thursday night on a whim and since then, I’ve already worn them twice. I can safely say they’ll be on heavy repeat over the summer. So there you go. Throw your figure fears out the window. And because I don’t swear on the blog I won’t swear more than once in one post (I just made up this rule now and I feel quite proud that I have this restraint), if your fears were borne out of some idiot’s nasty words, remember you’re giving them a huge “eff you” (it’s just not the same) whenever you wear your once-feared pieces.
Any of you have a style that you’ve always dreaded or been fearful of?
I hate to wear anything that exposes my arms because they're so flabby, but I wear sleeveless stuff anyway. Though the entire time I'm wearing sleeveless, I'm self conscious and uncomfortable 🙁
Someone called me thunder thighs once, too! I don't think you have anything to worry about, you look great in these pants!

This is so gorgeous, Alex! I honestly think your body type would look good in anything, especially after seeing your beach posts! This is exactly what I want to be wearing for the summer: brights and crisp whites.
