I’ve been trying to reset my circadian rhythm over the past week so that my night owl tendencies are somewhat lessened (they’re always there but got particularly bad about a couple weeks ago…if I had it my way, I’d get to stay up till 3 a.m. every night, which is what was beginning to happen!). So far, my attempts at change have been a miserable fail, though I’m not too surprised by it. While doing my Psych BA, I remember learning about just how hardwired our “night owl” or “early bird” programming usually is, and it certainly rings true for me. Looking back, I was always a weird little night owl…I was usually up until at least 1-2 a.m., even as a kid. I’d usually read with a teeny tiny flashlight or listen to the radio as quietly as possible, whisper-singing along to songs until the wee hours of the morning.
So anyway, this is my long and convoluted way of saying…sorry for the eye bags. I definitely don’t look as “fresh-faced” as I hope I normally do here, and I blame that largely on the fact that I’m trying to go against what is clearly my genetic grain and it is wreaking havoc on my zzz-time. Having said that, as hard as it might be and as tired as I currently look, I’m committed to at least learning to fall asleep by midnight within the span of this month…it’s my biggest health goal! It’s always irritated me that I have the nutrition, water and exercise down but continue to mess up in such an integral area of overall health. And I’ve always read that the best way to get there is to wake up at the time you’re hoping to set as a natural wakeup time for your body, so maybe expect some more sleepy faces in the future until it starts to feel more natural for me!
Or maybe I’ll just have to cover up with my Persol sunnies more…PS, did you hear yesterday’s news? The Persol eyewear giveaway is now open to ALL international readers, so no matter where you are, you can enter the giveaway!
Anyway, on the off chance that you are, do any of you sleep experts out there have tips for me? Fill me in!

Oh and PPS…if you’ve ever wanted to take a peek into my closet, now’s your chance! I opened up my wardrobe to the lovely Randa of The Unprecedented. for her Closet Confessions feature, and the post just went live today! I’ve always loved slightly voyeuristic features like these (peeking inside someone’s bag, getting some insight into someone’s wakeup routine, etc), so it’s fun to have it turned on me this time! Will be sharing some images on my Facebook page, on here and via Instagram in the next coming days, but if you want your fill now, stop by Randa’s blog! Thanks again to Randa for featuring me and thank you to Kaoverii Marapon, the talented photographer who skillfully snapped my teeny closet.

Loved your Closet Confessional – I'm amazed you can fit so many fabulous pieces into such a compact space!
This look is fantastic! I love the way you've paired the striped top with the gorgeous floral skirt, and your navy shoes really tie it all together. It's a very pretty look!

I've also been trying to "correct" my sleep patterns lately – years as a grad student who worked from home and hence worked until 1 am and then sleep in until 9 am have ill prepared me for having a proper job that involves getting up at 6 am. I have nailed down the going to bed early part of the equation yet but I'm working on it.

Also, I love the combination of florals and stripes here – is such an unexpected bit of patterning mixing and it looks great.

You still look very fresh-faced! In fact, this might be one of my favorite posts from you – I love that skirt and all the colors you coordinated in this outfit.

My husband is a night owl and if it wasn't for work he'd come to bed at 4am every night! I am the complete opposite… usually asleep by 9pm 😀

I love the combination of stripes and florals, always such a classic combination. This skirt has such lovely colours in it too!! I have been having a hard time getting up lately, I haven't gotten up before 8am in over a month, which is nice but I never have time to get everything done I need to. Sleeping patterns are hard to break! Good luck!!

After suffering for jetlag for weeks after my trip to Asia over Christmas (and I swear I'm still not fully recovered), I hear you on how difficult it is to reset our Circadian rhythms. Hope you can get to sleep before midnight though! Also, loved the Closet Confessions feature! How fun 🙂

I love this outfit, lady! The floral pencil skirt & striped top are gorgeous together! I am sooo not a night owl… usually by 10pm I desperately want to crawl in bed! Though I truly don't function well at all if I don't get enough sleep – completely zombie like and useless the next day if I don't get a full 8 hours! (or 9 or 10…) Good luck with your sleep goal!

Love the pattern-mixing here, and to be honest, you look so great that I would have never noticed bags under your eyes!

I wonder what you are if you aren't an early bird or a night owl? I don't stay up super late, but I hate getting up in the morning… I feel like there needs to be some sort of middle of the day bird!

Well, I think you look fresh and pretty. And I'm super impressed that you create such beautiful outfits from such a tiny closet. I guess I envisioned you with a massive walk in dressing room with a crystal chandelier and gilt mirrors.

About sleep rebalancing. A couple of things you can try are: taking a sea salt bath in the evening. Not just relaxing, but can literally help balance your day/night rhythm. I know I naturally feel so good, no fantastic, in Maui…and a lot of that is because I am in the ocean every day. Also, having a daylight alarm clock can be helpful. I think Banyan Books might sell them. You set the alarm for the time you want to wake, and it gradually lights up like the sun rising. And, if those aren't weird enough, I am a flower essence practitioner and there are flower essence homeopathics that can help with sleep issues. As you said, you have a natural tendency to be a night owl, but the body does a lot of rebuilding and repairing in those darkest hours, so if you can shift your patterns even somewhat, it will be for the best.
