Rainwear Chic
Jeans c/o Fidelity Denim, Twenty8Twelve leather jacket, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Club Monaco
top and camisole, ring c/o Brooklyn Designs, necklace c/o Keltie Leanne, Hunter Boots
To me, there is nothing as schlumpy as traditional rainboots. Even the noise they make as you trudge through puddles…schlump, schlump, schlump. It’s hard to feel chic when your feet are encased in thick rubber, yet they are a complete and utter necessity here in perpetually rainy Vancouver – in other words, you’re not going to get away with living here if you don’t have a pair.
Fortunately, not only are there some chic options (like most West Coasters, I love Hunter’s slim cuts and the amazing limited edition designs they do), but there are ways of styling oneself to minimize the “schlumpiness” (I’m really just trying to get as many derivatives of the word in here as possible) of waterproof footwear. As is almost always the case with me, layers are key, but this time I really rely on my thinnest layers. Thin cashmere tops over top of a silk camisole usually provides a good base, then ordinarily I’d pile on another thin sweater and then a coat but these pics were taken during a weirdly warm day last week so the leather jacket did just fine. My fave skinnies from Fidelity Denim topped with two layered tube socks kept my bottom half warm too. Really, it’s just all about trying to keep the look as sleek as possible – minimal bulkiness, daintier accessories than my usual enormous bags and dark neutrals.
Now speaking of Vancouver, if any of you local fashionistas haven’t nabbed your Deck Your Closet tickets yet….hurry up and get on it! They’re selling through quite quickly, and what’s more, they’re only available online, so if you snooze, you lose. We have even more exciting sponsors on board now, so though we’ve sold through our $20 VIP tickets, those who buy regular admission ($10) are still guaranteed a gift with purchase, lots of fun interactive elements (including a holiday lip courtesy of the lovely Erin from the sparkle and Revlon Canada!), indulgences at our candy bar or holiday treat station and, of course, the chance to shop our closets at hugely discounted prices. I’m just clearing out my closet at the moment and am feeling a tiny bit heartbroken about saying bye to some of the pieces but I’m excited for them to find new homes too!
"schlumped out" or not you look great!

Oh, Hunter's… you know, I never did break down and buy a pair. I had a traumatising experience involving wellies when I was twelve and I've never worn them since. But I must admit, pally, you do style your beautifully 🙂
xox,

Haha schlumping is such a great word and describes rain boots perfectly. But you're right, west coast requires them. And I am thankful every time I look out the window and it's pouring.
Love this look, you are Gorg as always!

I have been wanting a pair of Hunter's forever…I think if we ever move back to Oregon (where I'm from), I will definitely take the plunge! 🙂 Love how you styled yours here – definitely more chic than schlumpy!

OMG, they totally do make that schlumping sound… too funny. I love my Hunters though they are sooo heavy sometimes. I've been wearing Sorels here in Calgary though and they are even heavier so I guess you can't win with Canadian weather!

I love this leather jacket, girl! I feel like it hangs at all of the right places, & the front zipper gives it some dimension!

This leather jacket is so amazing, I love the cut of it!! Perfect with the dark skinnies and that pop of bright with the purse. Absolutely gorgeous look. It is hard to feel cute when you're limited by crappy weather, but you seem to do it very well

Sleek is the way to go with layers, and the touch of lace peeking out is so intriguing. The word "schlumping" always makes me smile. Hope you stay warm and dry this season!

I agree with you that I have always found rain boots a rather unpleasant look. I would see people in films or english photos and think well it seems logical though silly looking (even though they are completely perfect for rainy Indy). I think they can be made to look chic and pull a look together. I have seem gals on my college campus do it splendidly. However I am always worried I would be the gal to slip once indoors in them and injure myself but I have thought that I do need to buy a sturdy and long-lasting pair (i have heard wonderful things about this Hunter brand). I mean I am 26 years old. There is no reason why someone as old as me does not own a pair of rain boots!

Definitely know what you mean. Unfortunately, you just can't live without rain boots in Van — especially if you do a lot of walking. Love the way you've classed them up!
