Making the Cut

I’ve always been a big fan of nautical stripes, but the love affair has taken on a whole new form lately. While stripes are something I always assocate with the summer, something about the crispness of them also helps to liven up fall looks, a tactic that I’ve been employing a lot lately since I’m needing my heavy winter coats and knits now more than ever. In fact, I may or may not have another outfit planned for this week that’s heavy on the stripes (and by that I mean….I definitely do).
I’ve been in denial about needing a hair cut for awhile now but as evidenced by these pictures, it’s getting reeeeaaaaaal ratty. I’ve been seriously considering chopping it all off into an Olivia Palermo lob for a long time now but am not sure I have the guts to take the plunge! It’s funny that I’m such a wimp now because I used to have such a devil-may-care attitude with my hair when I was younger – I don’t know where that recklessness has gone. I mean, I used to have an asymmetrical cut that was SHAVED on one side. Literally. Shaved! And now I’m breaking out in a sweat about parting with a measly 8 inches or so. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it took me a good five years to grow my hair out to this length, or maybe it’s the fact that I was kind of traumatized by the “Bangs Debacle of Winter 2011” as I like to refer to it, but I am not kidding, I literally have anxiety over what to do with this mane of mine.
So far on Instagram I’ve gotten more votes to chop than to keep my length, but I’d love your feedback: to cut or not to cut?

I think the lob will look great on you. You look great now too, I guess its all about if you really want to change your hairstyle or not. I would love to see some pics of your asymmetrical cut. 🙂

Gorgeous photos and I love this layered outfit! I think you would look equally chic with your hair any length – but change is always fun!

You know my vote, pally – trim only. Especially considering how long it takes to grow your hair! Everyone will always tell you to go for a short cut, but none of them have to live with the results 🙂

I feel like I've been trying to grow out my hair for like… my whole life haha It just doesn't want to grow! So my vote has to be keep it on the longer side – and maybe add some layers and a side swoosh or something in the front to frame your face.
but in any case, whatever you decide I'm sure will look gorgeous!

Love your outfit! Hmm…I say start small. Cut off a few inches and then if you want you can always cut more. But then again it's just hair. It'll grow back. 🙂

I absolutely love this outfit, it's the perfect way to to layer!! That red skirt is such a lovely pop with the striped top and grey tones in this look. And that bag is amazing.
I cannot picture you with an asymmetrical cut and one side shaved!! That sounds wiiiild! But I definitely think the lob would look gorgeous on you and it might be a nice change for you!

I think a shorter hair cut would look good on you, but I completely understand your fear about taking that step! It's always somewhat emotional getting a dramatic hair cut (I find, at least). I am also so impressed with the photography skills in these photographs, and I am super in love with your outfit, it all works so well together!

Beautiful outfit! Funny you mention your hair because I'm currently in the same debate. I love the choppy yet still sleek Alexa Chung cut, but my hair is also very long and I just can't do drastic anymore. Either way, I need a cut… haha

You MUST do the Olivia bob. It's SOOOOO cute! You'd look adorable with that cut!

i follow your lead on the stripe love Alex! there's not a shopping trip that goes by where i don't at least pull one piece that's got them going on. love totala!! you've created something quite refreshing here, i'm really crushing about the structural qualities in this outfit. though the layering is entirely subtle tones the result is powerfully impactful.

oh and then there's the hair woes, i hear that! after many months of research i finally think i nailed down a girl who's going to do mine next week. excited but oh so nervous too. good luck sourcing out your next move lades, i am very fond of your looooong locks. mine takes forever and a day to grow so i know of what you speak. your gut will tell you what way to turn, don't let the stylist necessarily dictate what will happen though, watch your own back….(of hair!) so no "lop offs" happen unless you want em' to. happy mid-week. xo ♥

I love that bag! The colour is incredible, I love how you combined it with this outfit.
I definitely have issues with making big changes to my hair, although I will happily cut it, I almost always talk myself out of colouring it. Everyone usually says I should just take the plunge, but I think that if you're not comfortable doing it, there's probably a reason, and even though hair grows out, it takes a while!

You always look gorgeous,Alexandra! About cutting your hair…I think you should do it. I recently cut my hair,it was even longer than yours. It was a hard decision,I really loved my long hair but it's good to make a change every now and then. And I think Olivia lob is gonna look great on you 🙂

Ohhh girl I'm so there with you! I love the Olivia cut and have considered it too, but I don't think I could cut off my signature big hair. I think it would look fab – but wouldn't judge you for not taking the plunge! 🙂

I love the layers!! Doesn't look bulky at all, just cozy and warm =) Though I'm obviously pretty biased, you should definitely give your hair a good chop! It always grows back anyway. Hair or no hair, you always look gorgeous!

I think you'd look gorgeous with any hair length but if you're hair grows slowly (like Cee mentioned) then maybe starting off with something that's still below the shoulders might be nice? Then you can decide from there if you want to go shorter?

My hair is the slowest growing hair in the world so hair cuts and the idea of them give me anxiety!

    (love this look btw)

I am so in love with this outfit and these pictures! So gorgeous! You are seriously the BEST at layering! I even gave you a shout-out on my most recent blog post!

Normally, I am all about going for a big haircut (I love mine short), but your hair is SO gorgeous that I'm tempted to say don't cut too much! I am always jealous of people with hair like yours that can pull off long, healthy, wavy locks. I'd vote for just a trim! But you will look gorgeous regardless!
