Blackout

Twenty8Twelve leather jacket, Jeffrey Campbell heels, Club Monaco skirt, Jacob top, vintage bag,
cone studs c/o Poshlocket, H&M sunglasses

For this week’s Style Panel challenge on FASHION Magazine, we were given a task that was actually particularly challenging for me: how do you take the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-inspired black-on-black fall trend and incorporate it into your own style? Style-wise, I have next to nothing in common with Lisbeth Salander: where she picks black, I pick colour, when she goes for tattoos, piercings and a cropped cut, I go for…well, you get the point. We are complete sartorial opposites.

While I’m not a big on black-on-black, I did feel that if I livened up the look with femme silhouettes (like this delicate silk Club Monaco skirt) and some fun accessories (like these discretely studded heels), I could make the whole ensemble more my own. And, of course, having long, natural-coloured hair, no piercings and no tattoos (though I’ve wanted the same one since I was 17 and am just such a chicken) also help differentiate me from everyone’s favourite fictional hacker.

Do you have a bit of Lisbeth Salander in you (hopefully style-wise and not all that crazy dissociative personality stuff) or were you not as into all the heavy-on-the-black-leather looks that got sent down the fall 2012 runway?

I'm so excited about fall now, nothing I love more than a good dose of black. I'm always so envious of those who work so well with colour but for me neutrals just work better. Maybe my red hair is colour in itself?

I wondered why there were so many posts entitled Blackout in my bloglovin feed this morning 🙂 I'm actually a big fan of Lisbeth Salander as a literary character and have been toying with the idea of styling an ensemble inspired by her for a while now… But the fact is, the style isn't really me, and it's probably even less you, my colourful friend. You did it up like a champ, though. I'm loving your delicate skirt and those sunnies. Cannot wait to see you in just one week!
