Style Panel Challenge: Shorts

MinkPink cape, DIY cut-offs, F21 cuff, Rebecca Minkoff bag, H&M tank and wedges, necklace c/o Keltie Leanne Designs
You might remember I joined FASHION Magazine’s Style Panel recently! Last week, we were asked how to style flats without looking too casual – this week, we were challenged with describing how we wear shorts for our body type.

Dunh dunh duuuuuuuunh…bottoms…an hourglass-shaped girl’s nemesis. As happy as I am with the body I’ve been given, the types of bottoms that are out on the market nowadays are not exactly hourglass-friendly. The beginning and end of it is that if I was in my prime during the 80’s (and if I’d had a shred of dancing talent…which I don’t), I could’ve totally been one of the girls in Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” video. You know, little in the middle but she got much back. But alas, I was a wee babe in the 80’s and that would’ve just been weird so here I am now in the new millenium, having to DIY a pair of shorts out of jeans I already own just so they fit my “back” properly (though I really wish I was wearing those high-waisted spandex numbers so popular in the 80’s…I keep them for workouts and just love ’em).

Desite having a bit of a hate-hate relationship with shorts, I do love these little denim cut-offs to bits. I’ve had them for so long now that to be perfectly honest, I don’t even remember what cut the jeans were to begin with. I have been looking for a pair of paperbag shorts forever because I have a feeling they’d work well, but still haven’t found any…if anyone has recommendations, holla!

Happy humpday friends!

love how you style your shorts! So chic! I find short-shopping so tiring as most of the shorts these days are sooooooo short. I remember picking up my teenage niece's pair of shorts one time and said " wow, this is a pair of shorts?" So tiny and short.

I think the shorts look brilliant! And pairing them a looser and longer open blouse is a great idea if you're self-conscious about the curves.

You look fantastic here! I think wearing the cape is a great idea if you want to er, hide your assets, although if I had anything like that I think I'd want to flaunt it rather than hide it lol

You have great legs for shorts season. I'm not so ready for short shorts. Working on it though. Gotta do some more lunges.

I couldn't help but smile when I read yout Style Panel post – it made me remember being in the fitting rooms at J. Crew, discussing the waist gap conundrum 🙂 You obviously know what fits you, though, because this pair of cutoffs is just perfect. And I'm loving the addition of the cape – the longer hem with those short shorts is just the perfect combination. Hope you're having a fabulous week, pally!

I'm absolutely in love with your cape! It's the perfect piece that really completes your outfit. I think no matter what your shape, finding bottoms that fit perfectly will always be a challenge. Thank goodness you were able to make a pair of jeans work for you as shorts because these denim cut-offs are perfect on you!

Oh honey you are preaching to the choir. I dont do short. I've got a lot of junk in the trunk and like you, I am happy with my hourglass figure but shorts are not made for this baby who's got back 🙂

PS I have to ask who takes your photos ….how do you do it? and if there is a camera you recommend or ways to take photos I would be trully indebted if you could share! xoxo

I love your cape! and the diy shorts look great too! I've never been much of a shorts person but I've been wearing them quite frequently as of late (on the days it hasn't been pouring rain – which actually is not often due to this dismal Vancouver "summer").

Shorts are definitely one of the hardest things for me to wear. When I find a pair of shorts that fit really well on my shapely thighs (LOL!), the fit on the waist and hips are too big and look disasterous. I did pick up some fun shorts for summer at Old navy and they fit pretty well. 🙂

I love you in shorts, Alex. You totally are workin' these cut offs! And seriously, woman, you are so freakin' gorgeous! Breathtaking! Here's to a fab Friday.. yay for the almost-weekend!
