Genette Salgado

It is particularly special and important for me to share Genette Salgado’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection with you because not only is it absolutely exquisite, but Genette was the person who actually convinced me to start my blog. I very distinctly remember our conversation last year on April the 13th in which she suggested I start this blog in order to mutually express my two greatest loves in life (fashion and writing).  If it hadn’t been for her, I would’ve never hopped on my laptop that day, typed “blog” into my Google search (I’m not particularly bright when it comes to keywords), and created the framework for the blog that’s ended up meaning the world to me. So to preface this feature, I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you times a million to Genette – if it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be here today writing this feature on your beautiful collection!

This was the first time Genette showed at the Western Canada Fashion Week, and it was certainly a striking debut.  The collection was gracefully feminine yet edgy, filled with pieces in clean, structured silhouettes and meticulously designed details, and creatively ambitious while still being entirely wearable.
The collection, entitled “Baby, Whatcha Gonna Do With Your Life”, was inspired by Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and manages to encapsulate both the collection’s reference point of the upper crust’s evening soirées during the Edwardian Era and Genette’s current position in life.  Like many other emerging designers, she’s currently at a crossroads in life in which she doesn’t have a clear next step and events are unexpectedly unfolding of their own accord.  In my opinion, whatever her next step may be, I am sure it will be one that carries her collection and career forward in a positive way – with so much talent and ambition, it’s almost a certainty!
All right, well I’m off now to pack my bags and try on my birthday outfit one last time (it’s absurdly bright and inappropriate FYI…fuscia dress, turquoise clutch, blue nails…it’s like I think I’m going on a tropical vacation…and Whistler is covered in snow…).  This might sound a bit ridiculous, but this past year something weird or bad has happened to me on every special event…Christmas Day I woke up with one eye swollen shut from somehow scraping my retina in my sleep, New Year’s I got attacked by a dog and spent the whole night in the ER…I know this is me being weirdly superstitious and paranoid, but I really hope that there isn’t some sort of horrible cosmic pattern forming that’s centered around ruining all of the days that should be special moments for me.  “She sounds like she’s really losing it” might be a thought that’s currently crossing your mind…I’d have to agree with you.  But still, send your lucky vibes my way!
Have a great weekend my lovelies!  I’ll try to grab a pic of my Tropicana-Extravaganza birthday ensemble for you.
