This past month has honestly flown by so insanely quickly that I’m kind of freaked out (seriously), and all of a sudden, June is quite literally right around the corner. While we tend to have lots of sun in May and then later in the summer (usually even into October!) June’s kind of a tricky month here in Vancouver – patches of rain come and go all the time, the temperatures are actually a bit chillier and it’s often grey (just check out Snaps 1, 2, 3 and 4 from Instagram last year as proof!). Because of this, though we’re technically closer to summer than ever I tend to really rely on my spring-summer transition tricks around this time, especially the use of my ever-present utility jacket. Click through to discover 5 ways of styling it up with your summer wardrobe now!

1. With a delicate silk dress or separates (preferably in white or a light neutral).
I’m hard pressed to think of anything more femme or delicate than white silk (other than lace, maybe), which makes it a perfect foil for a utility jacket’s tougher vibe (a leather jacket would have the same effect here). This LOFT tank and Aritzia skirt go together so seamlessly that the jacket’s almost needed to break up the cohesive quality of it and add some edge.
2. With your denim cut-offs, adding in boho details.
Much like I did in this look, keep the foundation of your look summery and laid-back but add in your jacket to give some edge and more importantly, some much-needed warmth during chilly summer evenings or when the rain sets in (and speaking of which, with wellies this would totally work for festival chic attire too).
3. Wear it belted over a summery dress.
I’m obsessed with breezy ’70s style these days (but then again, who isn’t?) so I would go with a simple white lace dress, a huge men’s belt or even a woven one to define the waist, a floppy straw hat, rolled up sleeves and some suede ankle boots.
4. Overload on the floral.
I don’t know why but utility jackets pair particularly perfectly with florals. Keep the rest of your look a bit edgier/streamlined to keep the focus on whatever floral piece you have – a dream look would be a really femme, delicate floral printed dress with the utility jacket thrown overtop, classic Ray-Bans, studded ankle boots or Chelsea boots and a fringe bag like this Aritzia one I can’t stop wearing.
5. Layer play with light pieces.
I did a version of this idea with heavier winter pieces way back in January, but so that you’re not overwhelmed with heat while still playing with layers, you could add in a silk tank, an open linen button-up with the sleeves rolled up over the utility jacket, and bermuda shorts (again, all of these in white or lighter neutrals would look amazing against olive green).
And now I’m off to get to as much work as possible – with shoots lined up this week and then taking off to Kelowna for a quick weekend away to talk for the first time (eep!) at a conference, I’m trying to push through as much as I can. Nice that there’s a bit of an end in sight though as I start prepping for a July mostly away – can’t wait to take off again!
And finally, a big special birthday wish to my beautiful mum! My mum’s such an inspiration not just for me, but for all of her kids (da wolf pack, duh) and countless other people. This woman’s probably in the prime of her life in terms of physical fitness (she outruns me on the regular), she’s kicking ass professionally, she always makes time for her family and is proof that you can balance all of this while also pursuing things that make life more rich, like playing music, reading, etc. If I get to rock my 50s the way she has so far, I will feel very, very lucky (and proud). Happy birthday Mum!!!
Stunning! Love the slit in that flowy dress, it catches the wind so beautifully 🙂 You look gorgeous!
