I was invited to an event last week that I was so excited for but as the date approached, I was getting increasingly anxious about what to wear. The dress code was “pre-gala,” and while I usually feel like I have a pretty good grip on dress code do’s and don’ts, nothing sprang to mind as appropriate or on-point in the days leading up to the event. But as is often the case, minutes before needing to leave for the event, it all kind of came together using some basic style principles…5 of them to be exact!

1. Go monochromatic.

Pick one colour (like I did with dusty rose here) and dress tone-on-tone if you can – this will help give cohesion to your look and keep everything looking sleek and together.
2. But opt for a neutral or soft tone if you can.

If you’re not entirely sure about a dress code, you’re likely safer going for taupe, dove grey, petal pink, etc than a bold tone. Totally goes against what I said for wedding dressing tips, but since these tips are geared for moments of sartorial uncertainty, you’re best off opting for something discrete.
3. Ladylike, elegant and ethereal works every time.

I feel like this dress is actually pretty casual on its own, or at least that’s how I usually wear it. I got it for about $15 on sale from H&M 5 years ago and it’s one of the few pieces in my closet I can’t get rid of because while it’s got some distinct aspects about it, its ladylike, ethereal vibe works for almost any occasion if I’m in a pinch. Having something similarly ladylike is so great for an evening like this when you don’t want to go body-con in case that’s not appropriate, but also don’t want to do something like a ball gown either since the event’s not entirely formal. If you have something ethereal and pretty like this, throw in tonal accessories et voilà, you’ve nailed bohemian elegance!
4. Keep accessories and jewelry cohesive and dainty.

Same as the colour suggestion here – while you’re definitely doing something thematic with a tonal look, try to keep anything high statement at home so that you turn up looking elegant no matter what.
5. Make like the French – keep hair & beauty to a minimum.

You can’t go wrong with a low knot or ponytail, and glowing beauty with a soft pink lip is a cross-season staple. Normally I’m all about creating big waves for any events, but in the event that this was a more formal affair than I anticipated and my waves looked too casual, an artfully casual low ponytail seemed like a safer bet. Also, there’s something just so pretty about really no-fuss hair and beauty with a really stunning, elegant dress – it’s so unforced and effortless.
Still searching for a dress to get you out of any dress code mishaps? I’ve curated some similar picks below – kind of wanting each and every one of them!

Pretty! I saw a dress similar to this today while I was out shopping and really wanted it, but my wallet said no 🙂 I can relate — I always put on an outfit and then right before I leave for somewhere I end up changing and making myself late.
